I am committed to the importance of parental involvement in my students education.  I firmly believe that your child receives the best education when you and I work as a team.

Enclosed in this packet, you will find information about my classroom policies and expectations.  If you have any questions about this information or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or by e-mail.

Again, I am looking forward to this school year!  Lets make it a great one!

Friday Folders:

On Friday of each week, your childs Friday Folder will be sent home.  Enclosed will be your childs work from that week, graded papers, the weekly newsletter, as well as a weekly grade for Work Habits and Conduct.  Please review all of this information with your child.  The newsletter will give you a heads up about the upcoming week, as well as keep you posted on any upcoming important events and/or test dates.  The weekly grades for Work Habits and Conduct are derived from a checks system.  (This system is detailed in the next section.)  Basically, each child starts the week with an E.  Any checks received will be reflected in their Work Habits and/or Conduct grades as noted in the scale in the next section.  (More info. on this is in the Discipline section.)

The following is the checks system that is used in 3rd grade to determine Work Habits and Conduct marks on Friday Folders.

Work Habits:                                               Conduct:

0 checks = E                                              0 checks = E

1-2 checks = S                                           1 check = S

3-4 checks = N                                           2-3 checks = N

5+  checks = U                                          4-6 checks = U

Homework/Agenda Books:

Homework will be assigned, as needed, Monday through Thursday nights.  This does not include any necessary studying for tests/quizzes, or work on projects.  Study guides are sent home before tests to let you know what your child will be responsible for knowing on the tests.  Each time that your child does not have or does not complete his/her homework, a check is received for Work Habits on the Friday Folder.

Agenda books are filled out daily in class.  They detail what we have done each day in class, not just the nights homework.  The agendas are also an excellent way to communicate with me about any questions that you may have.  Please be sure to look over your childs agenda and initial each day that you have seen it.  This is a part of each childs responsibility.  If the agenda book is not initialed, a check will be received for Work Habits on the Friday Folder.  An easy way to accomplish this task is to incorporate it into your childs daily homework routine.

Discipline:

It is expected that everyone respect our learning environment.  Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in the classroom.  On the first day of school, expectations will be discussed and decided upon as a class.  It is expected that all students will abide by these expectations.

In the event of disruptive behavior, the child will first be given a friendly warning.  If the inappropriate behavior persists, the child will receive a check on his/her Friday Folder and have time-out.  For two checks, the child will have time-out and will have a conference with the teacher.  If more than two checks are received in one day, a note will be sent home.

*Severe Clause:  Some behaviors will automatically cause a student to be referred to the office.  Examples:  fighting, inappropriate touching, inappropriate language, disrespecting adults, etc.

Students who behave appropriately will be positively rewarded with praise, classroom tickets which can be traded in for rewards, and class treats.

Daily Snacks:

Research has proven that water helps to stimulate the brain.  Therefore, I allow my students to bring water bottles with them daily.  However, it is extremely important that the water bottle have a resealable top.  Your child may bring a snack from home during our snack time.  This snack needs to be healthy and not messy.  Beverages (other than water) are not allowed to be brought during snack time.
